As a software engineering hailing out of Boston, Massachusetts, Douglas Knight is pridefully an advocate for children of the future. Although, a top expert in his field, Knight’s passion is teaching younger children coding for their progressive ideas. Even with his coding fascination coming from gaming, Knight’s first job was working at a supermarket as a grocery bagger. Knight considers supermarket work experience humbling because of the knowledge that is gained through working with consumers and staff alike.
As a young kid, Knight furthered his coding interest with the development of computer gaming applications. In college that coding interest later evolved into computer science, which he earned his master’s degree for. He prides himself an ambassador to young adults by engaging with high school students to encourage interest in coding. His efforts to speak to teens and high school students is strictly charitable because of his strong belief in them. His work with young children inspires his continuous learning of, growth and contributions to the software development field. He gives credit to his first job, out of college, for being the great success he has become today.
With his work with teenagers, Knight hopes to inspire them from a young age to expand their creativity. This creativity deserves nourishment at early stages to prevent suppression by college rules and expectations to fit into a box. The ideas of today’s teenagers are fresh and can create new programs that will set them up for future excellence. He uses his experiences to attest to programming and coding a skill that is only expected to grow into the future. Although, considering his startup he admits to liking the challenge of keeping up with a company’s changing needs.
Douglas Knight speaks about taking on his computer science professor as a mentor who constantly encourages him to do more. He still keeps in touch with his mentor, who he goes to for consistent advice and updates on his career. Through his career, he is receptive to constructive feedback from others as he understands that growth isn’t possible without it. Integrity, honesty, and willingness to do what it takes is at the forefront of his values in value and success. He believes strongly in common efforts to change the lives of others, especially through public service.
Knight’s portfolio features much of his very own proprietary software that is published for his company and business clients. His involvement in the front and back end of coding helps the artistic side he is constantly working to improve. His relocation to the west coast’s, New Canaan has broadened his views of the field of technology and its possibilities. For this, he encourages more young adults to pick-up coding and not allow stigmas or others get in the way. He doesn’t find keeping motivated difficult because his company is constantly looking to him for assistance on new projects.
Through his career, life and charitable efforts, Knight enjoy the perk that involves traveling, especially as an ambassador for coding. His favorite thing about his travels and trips is the adventure that is always involved in finding a new place. For Knight, traveling is a hobby that has brought him in contact with great people and his speaking engagements. His upcoming travels include an anticipating summer trip to Scotland, and he hopes to finally take a visit to Australia. His best travel tips include don’t over-pack, only one pair of shoes and become familiar with ever-changing TSA requirements.
His favorite hobby is woodworking, which he claims as quiet time to reflect and a form of meditation. He enjoys furniture making art because he works with his hands and moves a plan from paper to functional life. He attributes his interest to Woodworking Basics by Peter Korn and its teaching of skills and power vs. traditional hand tools. He states that woodworking makes him calmer, plays fewer video games and better at planning, which transitions to his work. His best woodworking tip is to sensibly build on equipment over time, slowly determine needs and only purchase as necessary.
